Russian companies have historically played a major role in the foreign direct investments coming into India with investments across sectors like defence, science and technology, manufacturing and more. In the recent years, Russian companies are increasingly collaborating with the Indian private sector as well, instead of working with just state-owned enterprises. Moreover, Russian companies are looking to expand their manufacturing operations in India under the Make in India and other such initiatives of the Government of India. Bilateral trade between India and Russia reached USD 65.70 billion in the financial year 2023-24. 1. Uralmash

Uralmash, founded in the year 1933, is Russian manufacturer of heavy machines and equipment which operates under the Russian Engineering Corporation, OMZ. The company entered the Indian market in the 1950s when it started supplying rolling mill machinery to the Bhilai Metallurgical Plant. Subsequently, its client list expanded to include Coal India, Kudankulam Nuclear Plant and Steel Authority of India Limited.

Uralmash and Noida-based SRB International formed a joint venture in the year 2016. The joint venture, named Uralmash SRB India, produces heavy equipment for steel and mining industries along with spare parts for oil, gas and power companies.

Rosatom, established in the year 2007, is a Russian state-owned corporation specialising in nuclear reactor technology, nuclear fuel, uranium mining, wind power and other segments in nuclear energy and non-nuclear energy. The company has been operating in India right since its inception in the year 2007, and has provided assistance in constructing two light water reactors of VVER 1000 type at the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant. Rosatom’s scope of services included design of the installation, main and auxiliary equipment supply, installation supervision and personnel training.

Rosatom also supplies nuclear fuel to the Kudankulam NPP. The firm is going to build small modular reactors in the range of 100-200 MW for the Indian nuclear establishment.

Gazprom, founded in the year 1989, is a Russian majority state-owned multinational energy corporation specialising in various aspects of natural gas, petroleum and petrochemicals, such as exploration, drilling, refining, transport and distribution. In the year 2012, Gazprom and Gas Authority of India Limited signed a sales and purchase agreement for LNG supply. Gazprom commenced supplying liquefied natural gas to GAIL in the year 2018. As per the agreement, Gazprom will supply 2.5 million tonnes of LNG per annum for 20 years.

Gazprom and an Indian company named Engineers India Limited are working together to lay a gas pipeline between India and Russia.

4. BrahMos Aerospace

BrahMos Aerospace, founded in the year 1995, is a joint venture between NPO Mashinostroyenia of Russia and India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation. The company designs, develops, manufactures and markets BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles, and has successfully integrated the missile with land, ship, air and submarine launch platforms.

BrahMos Aerospace blends the capabilities of Russian NPOM and Indian DRDO. While NPOM is an expert in ramjet engines and space and cruise missile technologies, DRDO has the expertise in developing inertial navigation systems, mission software and mobile launchers.

5. Siloviye Mashiny

Siloviye Mashiny, established in the year 2000, is a Russian multinational manufacturer of machinery for various energy systems like nuclear power, hydroelectric power and thermal power. The company entered India in the early part of the 2000s and operates in the country through its representative office in Noida, UP.

Silovye Mashiny first contributed to the Indian energy sector by providing equipment and technical support for the construction of Sipat thermal power plant in Chhattisgarh and Barh Thermal power plant in Bihar. The company has also installed first four units of the Tehri hydroelectric plant in Uttarakhand.

The company has entered into an agreement with the largest mining company in India, NMDC, to set up a steel plant, with an annual capacity of 2-5 million tonnes, in Karnataka. Severstal would own 50% stakes in the plant. Implementation protocol to set up this plant was signed in the year 2018.

NLMK

NLMK, established in the year 1931, is among the four largest steel companies in Russia which produces multiple kinds of steel products, including electrical steels, specialty coated steels and flat steel products. The company is operating in India since the year 2012 and is engaged in the production of GO steel for oil and gas sector, metal and mining industry, radioelectric equipment and infrastructure projects. Its production facilities are located in the Aurik SEZ of Sambhajinagar, Maharashtra.

10. Stroytransgaz

Stroytransgaz, founded in the year 1990, is a Russian engineering and construction company specialising in the oil and gas industry. The company has built two sections of an east-west gas pipeline in India in collaboration with Reliance Gas Transportation Infrastructure Limited. Apart from two sections of 147 km and 102 km of the pipeline, it has also built six valve stations, a launching station and a scraper receiver.
